How to Select the Best Material for Your Custom Outdoor Furniture

When designing custom timber outdoor furniture, selecting the right material is crucial for creating long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing pieces that meet both functional and design needs. At Platinum Timber & Ply, we specialise in crafting bespoke wooden furniture for architects, builders, and designers looking to create unique outdoor solutions. From sourcing the highest quality timbers to expert craftsmanship, our ability to design and manufacture custom furniture pieces ensures that each project stands out.

Choosing the right timber or plywood material can determine your outdoor furniture’s durability, appearance, and maintenance needs. Some key material options include F27 Structural Hardwood, Plywood, and Softwoods (such as Treated Pine and Cedars), but which option is best suited to your next project?

F27 Structural Hardwood: Strength and Resilience

F27 Structural Hardwood is one of the most reliable choices for outdoor furniture, especially when durability is a priority. It is kiln-dried for extra stability, ensuring resistance to warping, cracking, and shrinking – essential factors when exposed to the elements. Its high-stress grade of F27 indicates that this timber can withstand up to 27 MPa (megapascals) of pressure, making it ideal for weight-bearing structures like benches, tables, and seating platforms.

F27 hardwood is classified as Durability Class 1, offering natural resistance to decay, termites, and other environmental threats. Its dense, hard surface makes it an excellent option for high-use outdoor furniture, including benches, tables, seating platforms, and other structural elements that require heavy load-bearing capacity.

In addition to its functional benefits, F27 hardwood boasts a beautiful, natural grain, making it a visually appealing choice for architects creating elegant, long-lasting outdoor furniture. Whether used in public spaces, commercial settings, or residential projects, this timber provides a timeless blend of strength and beauty.

Plywood: Eco-Friendly Versatility

Plywood offers a sustainable and versatile option for those seeking a more eco-conscious material. Plywood is a medium-density hardwood known for its flexibility and strength. Its sustainable nature makes it an appealing choice for architects and designers looking to incorporate environmentally friendly materials into their custom furniture pieces.

One of the standout characteristics of Plywood is its workability. The material is incredibly flexible yet durable, making it ideal for creating curved or intricate furniture designs. Whether you’re crafting commercial cabinetry, decorative carvings, or bespoke outdoor tables and seating, plywood offers a unique balance of strength and design flexibility. Plywood is particularly well-suited for outdoor projects where designers are looking for lightweight, functional materials with a smoother, refined aesthetic. Its fine-grain texture offers a clean, modern look, making it ideal for architects aiming to create minimalist outdoor furniture that enhances the surrounding environment.

Although Plywood may not have the same stress grade as F27 hardwood, it performs well in various outdoor applications when properly treated for moisture and UV protection. Its sustainable qualities also make it a popular choice for eco-conscious projects, contributing to the growing demand for environmentally friendly materials in construction and furniture design.

Softwoods: Treated Pine, White Cedar, and Red Cedar

Softwoods, including Treated Pine, White Cedar, and Red Cedar, are cost-effective and versatile materials that can be used for outdoor furniture—when properly treated. Softwoods are generally less dense than hardwoods, making them easier to work with for certain applications. However, softwoods must undergo treatment to withstand outdoor exposure because of their natural susceptibility to decay, insects, and environmental wear.

Treated Pine is one of the most commonly used softwoods for outdoor furniture. When pressure-treated, it becomes highly resistant to decay and moisture, making it suitable for various outdoor structures such as picnic tables, chairs, and pergolas. Treated Pine is also affordable and widely available, making it a budget-friendly option for large outdoor projects.

White Cedar and Red Cedar are also popular softwoods, particularly for their natural resistance to insects and rot. While these timbers have a lower density than hardwoods, their natural oils provide some protection against decay, although they are still best used in projects where the furniture is covered or located in a more sheltered outdoor environment. Cedar’s lightweight nature also makes it easy to work with when crafting delicate or intricate pieces, such as chairs or decorative benches.

When choosing softwoods for outdoor furniture, it’s essential to ensure that they are adequately treated to extend their lifespan. With the proper care and maintenance, softwoods can be a viable, attractive option for custom outdoor furniture projects.

Denman Village Precinct Elevation

Project Overview

The Denman Village project, a collaborative effort between Redbox Design Group, Street + Garden, and Platinum Timber & Ply, aimed to enhance the newly developed Denman Prospect suburb in Canberra, ACT. The vision was to create a unique suite of outdoor furniture that would complement the modern aesthetic of the shopping precinct while providing functional public spaces. Platinum Timber & Ply played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life by supplying and expertly fabricating a range of custom timber products, including platform benches, bin enclosures, bike racks, and bollards.

Design and Material Selection

The design concept for Denman Village was not just about creating public spaces but about crafting an experience. It revolved around organic forms that created a sense of flow and continuity, a design that was both unique and intriguing. This was achieved through the use of adjacent curved panels that subtly changed shape along the length of the benches. The selection of Eco 5000 LVL was crucial to this design, as it allowed for intricate curves while maintaining the durability needed for outdoor use. The furniture suite also incorporated robust materials such as stainless steel and precast concrete, ensuring that the pieces were both aesthetically pleasing and built to last.

Fabrication and Manufacturing

Platinum Timber & Ply’s expertise in timber fabrication was instrumental in the success of the Denman Village project. The custom platform benches, bin enclosures, bike racks, and bollards were all meticulously crafted to meet the precise design specifications. CNC machining allowed for the creation of the complex curves that defined the furniture’s organic aesthetic, while the careful selection of materials ensured that the final products were visually striking and highly durable.

Installation and Impact

The installation of the custom timber furniture suite in Denman Village has significantly impacted the community, creating inviting public spaces that encourage social interaction and enhance the suburb’s overall aesthetic. This impact is not just about the physical changes but about the sense of connection it fosters among the residents. The thoughtful combination of materials and the attention to detail in the fabrication process resulted in furniture pieces that are as functional as they are beautiful. Platinum Timber & Ply’s contribution to this project highlights our commitment to quality craftsmanship and our ability to collaborate effectively with design professionals to achieve outstanding results.

The Denman Village project stands as a testament to Platinum Timber & Ply’s ability to deliver custom timber solutions that meet the highest standards of design and durability. By working closely with Redbox Design Group and Street + Garden, we helped to create a unique and enduring public space that will continue to serve the Denman Prospect community for years to come.

Unlocking the Potential of Plywood Flooring: Your Complete Guide

Looking to elevate your space with a touch of timeless elegance and durability? Look no further than plywood flooring! Plywood flooring offers a myriad of benefits that make it a popular choice for applications across different industries.

Why Plywood Flooring?

Plywood flooring is a versatile and cost-effective flooring option that consists of multiple layers of wood veneers bonded together with adhesive. Each layer, or ply, is arranged with the wood grain perpendicular to adjacent layers, enhancing the strength and stability of the material. This construction method, known as cross-graining, minimises the expansion and contraction of the wood, making plywood flooring resistant to warping, cracking, and splitting. Plywood flooring comes in various grades, thicknesses, and finishes, offering a wide range of options to suit different design preferences and project requirements. Whether used in residential, commercial, or industrial settings, plywood flooring provides a durable, affordable, and aesthetically pleasing solution for flooring needs.

Pros:

  1. Affordability: Plywood flooring offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional hardwood floors, making it a budget-friendly option for both residential and commercial projects.
  2. Durability: With proper installation and maintenance, plywood flooring can withstand heavy foot traffic and everyday wear and tear, ensuring long-lasting performance.
  3. Versatility: Plywood comes in various grades, thicknesses, and finishes, allowing for versatile design possibilities to suit any aesthetic preference.
  4. Easy Installation: Unlike solid hardwood, plywood flooring is relatively easy to install, making it a popular choice for DIY enthusiasts and professional contractors alike.
  5. Environmental Friendliness: Plywood is often sourced from sustainable forestry practices, making it an eco-friendly flooring option for environmentally-conscious consumers.

Cons:

  1. Moisture Sensitivity: While some plywood varieties are moisture-resistant, others may be susceptible to water damage if not properly sealed or protected, limiting their use in moisture-prone areas.
  2. Appearance Variation: Plywood’s natural wood grain and texture may vary between sheets, potentially resulting in visible seams or inconsistencies in appearance, particularly in lower-grade options.

Applications Across Industries

Plywood flooring finds diverse applications across industries, serving as a reliable and versatile solution for a wide range of flooring needs.

  1. Residential: Plywood flooring adds warmth and character to homes, whether in bedrooms, living rooms, or kitchens. Its affordability and durability make it a popular choice for homeowners seeking a practical yet stylish flooring solution.
  2. Commercial: In commercial settings such as offices, retail stores, and restaurants, plywood flooring offers a balance of aesthetics and functionality. Its cost-effectiveness and ease of installation make it an attractive option for businesses looking to upgrade their space without breaking the bank.
  3. Hospitality: Plywood flooring’s durability and design versatility make it an ideal choice for hotels, resorts, and other hospitality venues. Whether in guest rooms, lobbies, or dining areas, plywood flooring provides a welcoming ambiance that withstands high foot traffic.
  4. Education: Plywood flooring is a practical choice for schools, universities, and educational institutions. Its affordability and resilience make it suitable for classrooms, libraries, and multipurpose halls, where durability and ease of maintenance are paramount.
