Pelican Waters is a vibrant master-planned community on the Sunshine Coast, designed to enhance outdoor living and create inviting public spaces. As part of the Central Park and Waterfront Park developments, Anembo Consultants and Pelican Waters engaged Street+Garden to design and supply custom outdoor furniture and architectural elements that would integrate seamlessly into the coastal landscape. Street+Garden collaborated with Platinum Timber & Ply (PTP) to provide high-quality timber materials for key furniture elements to achieve the durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal required for the project.

The Pelican Waters project aimed to reflect the natural beauty of its waterfront surroundings while ensuring the longevity of outdoor structures exposed to harsh coastal conditions. Street+Garden designed a collection of contemporary outdoor furniture and architectural features that adhered to the Sunshine Coast Open Space Landscape Infrastructure Manual (LIM). This award-winning guideline prioritises sustainability, durability, and accessibility, ensuring public amenities meet the highest standards for long-term usability.

The Vision: Artistry and Foliage-Inspired Furniture 

Street+Garden was commissioned by the City of Newcastle to develop a seating solution that would blend harmoniously with the area’s natural landscape. Drawing inspiration from the iconic fig trees in the region, the designers created a geometric, laser-cut pattern that symbolised the intertwining branches and leaves of these trees. The seating arrangements were designed to weave naturally through the landscape, enhancing the organic aesthetic of the East End Village. 

PTP Supplying Custom Timber Solutions 

Platinum Timber & Ply played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life by supplying the custom-selected and finished wood planks used for the benches, backed benches and custom curved benches. PTP’s extensive range of durable and sustainably sourced timber ensured that the street furniture not only met aesthetic expectations but also provided long-lasting resilience against outdoor conditions. 

These modular benches allowed for various configurations, enabling the creation of intimate seating nooks as well as continuous banks of seating, offering flexibility for public use and urban integration.

Project Overview 

The Miles Streetscape revitalisation project, spearheaded by Street + Garden, aimed to breathe new life into the Miles CBD with a distinctive range of outdoor furniture. The design brief called for benches, bin enclosures, bollards, stools, circular tables, and curvilinear seating that subtly referenced the area’s iconic Bottle Tree. Platinum Timber & Ply were proud to work alongside Street + Garden, supplying all timber products and bringing their innovative design to fruition through meticulous fabrication, manufacturing, and assembly. 

Design and Material Selection 

A key aspect of the project was to make subtle references to the Bottle Tree, an integral part of the area’s identity. The steel frames of each product were designed to reflect the bulbous shape of the plant and finished with an earthy bronze powder coat. This complemented the Spotted Gum timber tops Platinum Timber & Ply provided, ensuring a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing final product. 

Fabrication and Manufacturing 

Platinum Timber & Ply’s expertise was crucial in expertly crafting and fabricating various F27 structural hardwood timber custom pieces, including tables, stools, curved benches, backed and backless benches, bin enclosures, and bollards. Each piece of hardwood timber was CNC machined with a curve that repeats across the furniture’s length, furthering the design’s organic nature. This meticulous attention to detail ensured that the furniture not only met the design brief but also stood up to the rigours of outdoor use. 

Installation and Impact 

The installation of the custom timber furniture suite transformed the Miles CBD, adding visual interest and functionality to the area. The combination of hardwearing, durable materials, provided by Platinum Timber & Ply, with a soft and delicate aesthetic resulted in a range of products that will continue to enhance the beauty and usability of the space for years to come.
